Preventing Sexual Assault

We need to continue the efforts to educate and bring awareness to sexual assault. It is on all of us. It cannot just be women fighting for rights for victims- men need to stand with us as well.

When we sit and do nothing, we actually are picking a side—we are picking the side of the oppressor.

April 29, 2014 – Vice President Biden delivers remarks at an event releasing the first report of the White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault.”

“We had psychologists and psychiatrists testify. They pointed out that the most difficult kind of assault to recover from is the one where you knew the perpetrator”.

On September 19, 2014 in the East Room of the White House, President Obama delivered remarks to help launch “It’s On Us,” a campaign to end campus sexual assault.

President Obama says that as a government, and as a nation, we have the capacity to stop sexual assault, support those who have survived it, and bring perpetrators to justice. January 22, 2014.”

“It is not just on the parents of young women to caution them. It is on the parents of young men to teach them respect for women”.

  2. “We need to continue the efforts to educate and bring awareness to sexual assault. It is on all of us. It cannot just be women fighting for rights for victims- men need to stand with us as well.” You are right with this. We, men, are doing everything we can to collaborate!!

    1. It is so great to hear that you agree! Men must stand with us too- they are victims as well, and it is a fight for all of us. Thank you for reading, commenting, and supporting the cause. #ItsOnUs

  3. Important post. I didn’t know that VP Biden and President Obama spoke out about this topic so much. I’m so happy they did. But I must say I doubt the current VP and President will do as much. So you are right that it must come from the people.

Its been a long time since I was in college, but I went to an all girls college (Douglass College), which is part of Rutgers University in NJ. Every year the people from the whole university would participate in a “Take back the night” event to end sexual violence. The university was famous for this event. But it can’t just be talked about on one night.

  4. Great Post! From the very first sentence… Thank you for your advocacy on this topic as I am a childhood sex abuse and trauma survivor. I love visiting your blog and keep up the awesome work you do for many! I also thank you for stopping by my blog. Means much to me.

    1. Thank you so much for visiting and commenting, Catherine! I am so sorry to hear that you are a victim as well- one victim is already too many. I am so glad that you are already able to talk about it, as that is already a big step in itself. I am also so happy that this blog means something to you, and that you support the causes.
You are very welcome for the visits- keep doing great work!

      1. I appreciate the kind words and the SUPPORT means much to me.

I will advocate loudly as feeling more comfortable sharing that part of my life to help others NOT TURN to addictions as a coping skill or “escape” instead of learning to process it in a health manner XOXO

  5. Thank you for this post. I was raped and as usual it is difficult to read this but I forced myself and I am happy that i did. As I am typing this now I am full of anxiety. I learned from your awesome post that being sexually assaulted by someone you know is the hardest to get over and I never knew that or heard that before. Thank you for that information because I never knew that and it makes sense and has helped me greatly to read that. I knew my perpetrator and even took it took it to court however this man got off because of the fact that they said I did know him, etc. I tried to help them get this dangerous man off the streets but they did not listen to me. Now he is in prison serving a 40 year prison sentence for attempted murder of someone else. I praise God he did not murde anyone and I praise God deeply that he is off the streets and I do not have to worry about him. He is in prison for about 24 more years. Thanks for your post and your valuable and important information. Hugs.

    1. I am so sorry to hear that you are a victim as well. Sexual assault is one of the worst things you can do to another human being, and I greatly empathize. I want you to know that I stand with you.
I commend you for coming forward and taking this person to court- this is so brave and so many are not able to do this. How interesting that in the end, he was put in jail, though the attempted murder could have been prevented if you got justice in the first place! This system can barely be called a “justice system” sometimes.
You are very welcome for this post, though I’d like to thank YOU for sharing your story. I know how hard it is to read about this topic when it is so personal, so you are remarkably brave even for that. If you ever want more information, I hope my other posts may help you too.
      Best wishes!
